General Eye Examination
A detailed evaluation of visual function and of the front and back of the eye, eyelids, and orbit, using a slit-lamp biomicroscope and indirect ophthalmoscope.
Tonometry
Electronic measurement of intraocular pressure. Elevated pressure can cause complete blindness within 12 hours, so prompt testing is critical. Available for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and small mammals.
Tear Production Testing
Evaluates for dry eye disease, a frequent cause of ocular discomfort and irritation that can ultimately injure the eye.
Special Stains
Fluorescein, rose Bengal, and lissamine green stains to detect corneal ulcers and surface abnormalities.
Nasolacrimal Duct Evaluation
A specialized probe assesses tear drainage from the eye to the nose and mouth, detecting clogs or damage that cause excessive tearing.
Chromatic Pupil Light Reflex (cPLR) Testing
Allows early detection of retina and optic nerve abnormalities — often before any vision problems occur. Developed by Dr. Grozdanić at Iowa State University in 2006.
Electroretinography (ERG)
Records the electrical activity of the retina to detect photoreceptor and retinal disease. Requires a short dark-adaptation period.
Ocular Ultrasound
Examines structures of the eye and orbit, including high-frequency ultrasonography to detect abnormalities affecting fluid flow within the eye.
Surgical Services
A full range of ophthalmic surgery, including procedures available at few veterinary practices.
Eyelid Surgery
Correction of entropion, ectropion, distichiasis, ectopic cilia, trichiasis, heavy eyelid folds, incomplete closure, and eyelid tumors to restore normal eyelid function.
Third Eyelid Surgery
Repositioning of a prolapsed gland ("cherry eye") with a recurrence-resistant technique, plus third eyelid repair and tumor removal.
Nasolacrimal Duct Surgery
Reconstruction of the tear-drainage duct after trauma or inflammation, and widening of duct openings to restore normal tear flow.
Corneal Surgery
Conjunctival grafts, corneo-scleral transposition, superficial keratectomy, and corneal transplants — including artificial corneal transplants, a procedure Dr. Grozdanić pioneered in veterinary patients.
Glaucoma Surgery
Subconjunctival and frontal sinus shunt placement, diode laser treatment of the ciliary body, and preoperative screening.
Lens & Cataract Surgery
Emergency and routine lens removal for luxation, and cataract removal by phacoemulsification with placement of an artificial lens.
Retinal Surgery
Transpupillary and transscleral laser procedures, trans-scleral cryoprocedures, and intraoperative vitrectomy to prevent retinal detachment.
Orbital Surgery
Enucleation with prosthesis, evisceration, and orbital exploratory surgery for removal of tumors and foreign bodies.
Ocular Microbiology Laboratory
Animal Eye Consultants of Iowa operates the first veterinary laboratory in the USA dedicated exclusively to ocular microbiology. Bacterial cultures achieve a 74% growth rate — substantially higher than reported in veterinary literature — and antibiotic susceptibility panels are analyzed following CLSI guidelines for clinically relevant treatment guidance. The service is available to referring veterinarians.
