Your First Visit
A little preparation helps your pet's first ophthalmology appointment go smoothly. Here's what to know before you arrive.
Before your appointment
- Complete the New Patient Form and bring it with you.
- Ask your veterinarian to send a referral form in advance by email or fax. A referral is not required for eye screening examinations or CERF exams.
- Do not feed your pet for 12 hours before the appointment (water is fine) in case general anesthesia is needed.
What to bring
- All of your pet's current medications
- Your regular veterinarian's name and phone number
- A method of payment
- Your completed New Patient Form
What to expect
- Plan for about an hour at the clinic. The initial examination usually takes 30 minutes; recheck visits are typically 10–15 minutes.
- An owner or designated guardian must attend the initial appointment.
- Common diagnostic tests include vision evaluation, pupil response testing, tear production measurement, eye pressure testing, fluorescein staining, and a detailed retinal examination.
- Discharge information is provided the same day or within 24 hours. Minor procedures may be done the same day; major surgeries are scheduled separately.
