Chalazion

A chalazion is a nodule that develops along the eyelid margin as a consequence of obstruction of the sebaceous (Meibomian) glands of the eyelid. It is usually firm and nonpainful. Because it resembles an eyelid neoplasm, an accurate diagnosis is required. Chalazia most commonly occur as a consequence of allergic diseases of the skin and conjunctiva.

Treatment

In most cases, a small chalazion may resolve spontaneously after systemic and topical medications are introduced to control allergic skin and conjunctival disease, together with ocular medications intended to improve tear-film quality. If the chalazion is larger and persistent and the dog is cooperative, warm compresses are applied for 10 minutes three to four times daily. Systemic anti-inflammatory medication is administered. If medical treatment is unsuccessful, surgical treatment is performed by incising and draining the chalazion.
